After a long winter, spring is finally here and it’s time to get out from under the blankets and get active again! There’s plenty of ways for you to get moving across Derby this season, here’s eight different ways to get active now the weather’s turned.
Grab a racket
Tennis is a great way to get outdoors, have fun and get active. This sport is made for the spring weather, giving you a chance to be in the beautiful outdoors whilst still getting fit. Markeaton Park is the perfect spot for a game of tennis when the weather’s at its best. Courts can be booked online here.
Join the gym
Our gyms offer great facilities for year-round fitness. Find what gets you active at Derby Arena, Springwood Leisure Centre or Queen’s Leisure Centre. Run in the park
Make the most of the beautiful spring weather by taking fitness outdoors. Derby Parks have great space to offer every runner, whatever their fitness level. Get inspired by other runners by joining in the Parkrun every Saturday at 9am in Markeaton Park.
Take a dive
At Queen’s Leisure Centre there’s plenty of different ways to get active in the water. Try something new with Aqua Circuits, an energetic cardio class that will challenge and motivate exercisers with an eclectic mix of circuit stations and HIIT. For anyone who doesn’t like the sound of high intensity, there’s always plenty of time for a casual, slow-paced swim during public swim sessions. Get on your bike
For anyone looking for something new, Derby Arena offers the perfect new fitness experience with track cycling. Follow in the footsteps of cycling greats such as Sir Bradley Wiggins, Dame Sarah Storey and Laura Kenny OBE by riding on the 250m indoor cycle track. Give track cycling a go this spring, on Saturday 12 May cyclists can get their accreditation on the fast track course for just £150, find out more here or for those trying out track cycling for the first time they can join in the Commonwealth Games Glory day at Derby Arena and take part in a track taster session.
Meet with others
Getting fit can be a bore, but it’s always much more fun with friends. Derby Active offers plenty of classes across their leisure centres so there’s something for everyone and every type of activity. On Saturday 14 April the ultimate workout is coming to Derby Arena and Springwood Leisure Centre as they launch all new Les Mills classes. Completely free BodyAttack100, BodyCombat and BodyPump will stretch groups to new limits. Information about the new classes can be found here.
Take a swing
Now that the snow has melted and the sun has made its appearance it’s time to get on the golf course and get putting! Take in some of the best views in Derby at Allestree Golf Course whilst playing the par 68 golf course. Try out golf from just £10 a round today, or regular golfers can buy an unlimited season ticket for less than £8 a week across the whole year!
Take a friend
Everything is better when you’ve got a buddy to do it with, and getting fit is no different! Springwood Leisure Centre is running Active Living Sports sessions, specifically tailored for those aged 50 or over, which includes badminton, short-mat bowls and table tennis sessions.
