Olympic cycling gold medallist gives master class at Arena open weekend

Olympic Gold Medallist and World Champion Joanna Rowsell MBE is set to cause a spin with a track cycling master class and Wattbike Showcase at our Open Weekend, taking place 28-29 March.

Visitors to the Open Weekend – the highlight of the 30 day ‘unwrapping Derby Arena’ programme – will be treated to a showcase celebrating what the new iconic venue has on offer, including Wattbike taster sessions led by Joanna Rowsell, track cycling master classes from World Masters Champion Geoff Cooke and featuring Joanna Rowsell and extreme stunt bike performances from Joe Oakley – World Record Holder, BMX World Champion and Britain’s Got Talent star.

Joanna Rowsell MBE competed at the London 2012 Olympics where she won Gold in the Women’s Team Pursuit, alongside Dani King and Laura Trott. She’s now training hard towards her goal of competing at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Open from 10am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday, Derby residents and visitors'll have the chance to visit the café, take a look at the state of the art gym facilities, as well as experience and engage in a range of exhibitions and performances.

The two day Open Weekend programme will also include:

  • showcase spectator sports events including Darkstar mens Volleyball Club, Derbyshire Institute of Sport Badminton and FS Derby (Futsal)
  • a variety of cultural performances
  • guided tours of the building
  • exhibitor stands
  • Cycle Derby try it sessions
  • fitness gym tours

Join a Wattbike Instructor for a 30 minute taster session during our Open Weekend where you will learn about how the Wattbike works, view and improve your pedalling technique via the Polar View and experience the real ride feel whilst viewing all of your data on the big screen.
