International Medallists to compete at Derby Arena

On Saturday 17 February at Derby Arena some of the best track cyclists in the country will be competing to win the Omnium title. A few significant teams that will be taking part in the event include 100 % ME, Team Breeze and Derby Arena’s own Team KGF.

Derby Arena’s own team, British champions, Team KGF will be riding in the event following on from achieving a superb team pursuit gold at the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Minsk on Sunday 21 January. The British team beat Russian team Lokosphinx at the World Cup by over two seconds, in a time of 3:56.015. Success at the latest round of the UCI Track World Cup in Minsk followed on from Team KGF achieving tremendous success in the 2017 HSBC UK British National Track Cycling Championships where they won three golds and a silver, alongside breaking the competition record for the 4km Team Pursuit with 4.04.644. Cyclists Harry Tanfield and Jacob Tipper will be competing at the event on Saturday.

100% ME is Team GB’s senior team raise awareness of anti-doping in the sport and the team for the omnium will include top riders Matthew Bostock, Ethan Hayter, Fred Wright, Matthew Walls and Rhys Britton. Matthew Walls, Ethan Hayter and Rhys Britton won Bronze in the Team Pursuit at the 2016 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships. Matthew Bostock won Bronze in the same year in the Team Pursuit at the UEC European Track Championships. Last year Fred Wright won gold in the junior omnium event at the European Track Championships.

Also riding in the event will be members from Team GB’s Team Breeze, a senior team to raise the profile of women in the sport. Team Breeze member Ellie Dickinson, who will be riding on Saturday 17 February, won gold in 2016 at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, Round 1. Also riding from Team Breeze will be Rebecca Raybould, winner of the scratch race at the 2016 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships.

Derby Arena is hosting the HSBC UK National Men’s & Women’s Omnium Championships on Saturday 17 February 2018 with doors opening from 10.30am. This fast-paced track cycling competition, held under British Cycling and UCI rules, will consist of four events with separate competitions for male and female riders. The winner of the Omnium will be the rider with the highest total of points, following the thrilling Scratch, Tempo, Elimination and the Points race final. Tickets are still available, buy them quick!
