Five Derby Arena riders have been selected to compete for Team England, Wales and Scotland for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth games. Jonathan Wale, Ethan Vernon, Dan Bigham, Charlie Tanfield and Harry Tanfield have all been selected to compete in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast.
Jonathan Wale, one of Derby Arena based Team KGF’s riders, will be competing in the Kilo time trial for Team Scotland. Wale’s selection follows on from Team KGF’s recent success at the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in January where the team achieved a superb team pursuit gold.
Wale’s teammates Dan Bigham and Charlie Tanfield will also be competing in the Commonwealth Games, for time trial and track endurance. Bigham and Tanfield are competing as part of Team England and the selection follows from their recent appearance at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Charlie Tanfield, in his world championship debut, achieved an astounding gold as part of Team GB’s men’s team pursuit at the championships.
Charlie’s brother Harry Tanfield, who also trains at Derby Arena, will be competing alongside his brother as part of Team England in the road time trial. Harry recently competed stunningly at Derby Arena in the HSBC National Omnium Championships.
Ethan Vernon, who recently competed for Team GB in the 2018 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships, has also been selected to compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Vernon will be competing in track cycling for Wales.
Councillor Amo Raju, Cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said:
“I’m delighted to hear that so many world class riders that train at Derby Arena will be going to the games. Team Manager Ellie Green said of the selection:
