Open weekend at Derby Arena

Mon 30 Mar 2015

Over the weekend of 28-29 March we welcomed more than 5400 people though our doors.

Everyone was welcome to come along, have a look around, watch demonstrations and give certain activities a go. Amongst the exciting activities on offer, Wattbike were on site offering taster sessions throughout the day, with Joanna Rowsell inspiring, motivating and giving advice to all attending the Sunday’s sessions. Joanna is a great ambassador for cycling and is a real inspiration to us all. We also had the great opportunity of watching her cycle our track!

Alongside the Wattbike sessions our visitors were able to enjoy the sports courts, playing badminton and having a go at Cycle Derby organised activities, such as trying out a track bike and a balance bike.

On Saturday 28 March our visitors were entertained by sports showcase performances, such as Futsal demonstrations by FS Derby, Volleyball demonstrations by Darkstar Volleyball Club and Badminton demonstrations by Derbyshire Institute of Sport.

There were lots of cultural acts taking place throughout Saturday, including Charity Shop DJ, Abbie Rechert, Adjudicators, Alice Macy, Belle Ayres, Georgia Fowler, Emma Bladen-Jones, The Herron Brothers, Hoverla Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, Hubbub Theatre and Legwarmerz.

On Sunday 29 March extreme stunt bike world record holder, BMX champion and Britain’s Got Talent start – Joe Oakley was entertaining the visitors.

Cultural performances were still very popular on Sunday with Charity Shop DJ, Belle Ayres, Georgia Fowler, Harriet, Hubbub Theatre, Karl & The Marx Brothers, Kezia Gill, Scott Thomas and Sports Day performing.

Track cycling was not forgotten about either as Derby City go ride track cycling, para-cycling sessions and a track cycling master class from Geoff Cooke took place on both days.

There were also tours taking place throughout the open weekend, a great opportunity for everyone to find out more about the Arena, including interesting facts and information on the construction and future of the Arena.

We hope that each and every one of you have had a lovely time at the Arena and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.
